Arena di Serdica
★★★★★Unique luxury hotel built directly above the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre of Serdica — glazed floors reveal the archaeological site below, and the rooftop pool overlooks Sofia's cathedral.
Budget Europe's hidden gem — ancient churches, Soviet grandeur and Vitosha hiking at your door
Sofia is the most affordable capital city break in the EU, yet it stacks an unlikely density of history into its wide boulevards. Roman ruins, Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and Soviet-era monuments occupy the same few city blocks in the centre, while Mount Vitosha rises directly from the southern suburbs, putting ski runs and hiking trails within 30 minutes of any hotel lobby. HaveNaGo highlights hotels clustered between the Largo complex and Vitosha Boulevard, where the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Sofia Synagogue and the covered market hall are all reachable on foot. Budget travellers find rates well below Warsaw or Krakow; the boutique hotel scene in Oborishte and Lozenets rivals any Balkan capital for style. Summer evenings on the Yellow Brick Road around NDK are lively and inexpensive — bring an appetite for banitsa and good red wine.
