Busan

Korea's seaside second city — beaches, temples and fish markets

Busan is South Korea's second city and its most relaxed: 3.3 million people spread between mountains and a coastline of surf beaches, cliffside temples and Korea's biggest fish market at Jagalchi. The KTX high-speed train reaches Seoul in about 2.5 hours, but Busan rewards more than a day trip. Haeundae Beach is where most visitors stay, with a skyline of resort towers above white sand; Gwangalli offers a younger café scene facing the illuminated Gwangan Bridge, Seomyeon is the inland transit-and-nightlife hub, and Nampo puts you beside Jagalchi and the Gamcheon Culture Village. According to HaveNaGo's selection, Busan is excellent value: sea-view 4-star rooms typically cost €60–120 per night, roughly half of what similar views cost in Hong Kong. Book 2–3 months ahead for July–August beach season and early October, when the Busan International Film Festival fills Haeundae.

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Busan is best for first-time visitors?

Haeundae. You get the beach, the coastal Blueline train and the widest hotel choice, with the metro linking you to Jagalchi and Seomyeon in 30–40 minutes. Pick Gwangalli if you prefer cafés and bridge views over resort crowds.

How many nights do you need in Busan?

Two to three nights covers Haeundae, the Haedong Yonggungsa seaside temple, Gamcheon Culture Village and Jagalchi market. A third or fourth night adds Igidae's coastal walk and a proper evening at Gwangalli.

Is Busan cheaper than Seoul for hotels?

Generally yes — outside beach season you'll pay 10–30% less than Seoul for equivalent rooms, and sea-view 4-star stays start around €60 per night. The exceptions are July–August weekends and the film festival in early October, when Haeundae prices can double.

When is the best time to visit Busan?

May–June and September–October: warm sea air without the July–August crowds and typhoon-season humidity. Early October adds the film festival buzz; cherry blossoms arrive in late March, earlier than Seoul.
