Best Time to Visit Southeast Asia: Country-by-Country Guide (2026)
Thailand's wet and dry seasons, Vietnam's regional monsoon, and which country is perfect at which time — the definitive guide to planning when to visit Southeast Asia in 2026.
The Southeast Asia Climate Logic
Southeast Asia’s climate is dominated by the monsoon system — but the monsoon affects different countries at different times, moving with the seasons and creating complex regional variations. The result is that Southeast Asia is never entirely “in season” or “out of season” — there is always at least one excellent destination available at any time of year.
The organizing principle: the northeast monsoon (November–April) brings dry weather to northern Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia; the southwest monsoon (May–October) reverses the pattern. Indonesia’s equatorial position creates a different pattern again.
Thailand
Two Seasons, Three Regions
Thailand has three distinct climatic regions:
North and Central Thailand (Bangkok and Chiang Mai):
- November–April: Dry season — the best time to visit. Bangkok’s famous heat is still present (28–35°C) but manageable; Chiang Mai has some of Thailand’s most beautiful cool mornings (15–22°C) in December–January.
- May–October: Wet season — heavy afternoon rain, high humidity, Green Season hotel discounts (20–40% off)
Southern Thailand — Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Hua Hin):
- December–April: Best for the Gulf side — dry, calm, sunny
- September–October: Particularly wet; avoid
Southern Thailand — Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta):
- November–April: Best for the Andaman coast
- May–October: Monsoon season; the opposite of the Gulf side timing
Best overall Thailand months: November–March (nationwide dry season)
Vietnam
Three Climates in One Country
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa):
- October–November: Best — autumn, comfortable (22–26°C), clear skies
- March–April: Spring alternative — warming, good visibility
- May–August: Hot and humid (34–38°C) with significant rain
Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang):
- February–August: Best — dry and comfortable
- October–December: Central Vietnam’s rain season (inverse of the rest of the country)
Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta):
- December–April: Dry season best
- May–October: Wet season (Mekong floods, complex logistics)
Best overall strategy: October–November visits the whole country north to south; March–April works for north and center.
Bali, Indonesia
Bali’s equatorial position creates a more consistent climate:
April–September: Dry season — best for beaches and outdoor activities. June–August is peak season (maximum prices and crowds).
October–March: Wet season — heavy afternoon showers, lush green landscape, 30–50% lower hotel prices at luxury properties.
Best Bali months: May–June and September–October — warm and dry with lower prices than peak season.
Cambodia
Angkor Wat: Best November–April
November–April: Dry season — the standard recommended time. Temperatures rise from 25°C (November) to 38°C (April). October–November is particularly recommended: the Tonle Sap Lake begins receding, thousands of waterbirds arrive, and the Floating Village experience is at its best.
May–October: Wet season — Angkor Wat surrounded by reflective water (extraordinary mirror-image temple reflections), brilliant green landscape. Afternoon rains fall 2–3 hours daily but mornings are clear. Hotels at Angkor drop 40–50%.

FAQ
Is the wet season really that bad? In most destinations, no — the afternoon showers (typically 2–4 hours after midday) are predictable and leave mornings completely clear. The wet season advantages (empty beaches, dramatically reduced prices, lush landscapes) often outweigh the inconvenience. The exceptions are central Vietnam in October–December (genuinely disruptive flooding possible) and southern Thailand in September–October (rough seas).
Which month is best for visiting the whole region in one trip? October–November — Vietnam from north to south is excellent, Cambodia is transitioning to dry season, Thailand’s north is cooling down, and Bali’s dry season is ending at its own shoulder. It’s the closest thing to a universally good month for the entire region.
Is Southeast Asia safe to visit during typhoon season? The Philippines and parts of Vietnam are occasionally affected by typhoons (July–November, peak August–October). The Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coast are not in the primary typhoon path. Check current forecasts for Philippines travel; Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia are generally not typhoon-affected.
